Senior Software Engineer – Windows Desktop with PowerBASIC

Svitla Systems Inc. is looking for a Senior Windows Desktop Engineer with PowerBASIC for a full-time position (40 hours per week) in Europe. Our client is a comprehensive tax filing software that offers a wide range of features. It’s an embedded role within an established internal engineering team.

Requirements:

• Strong experience developing Windows desktop applications, using PowerBASIC.

• Understanding of large, monolithic codebases.

• Expertise in debugging and analytics.

• Ability to learn and work effectively in older systems that may lack modern tooling or documentation.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with distributed teams.

Nice to have:

• Experience with tax software, tax preparation processes, financial systems, or other regulated domains.

• Prior experience maintaining long-lived commercial software products.

Responsibilities:

• Build, enhance, and maintain features within a large Windows desktop application written in PowerBASIC.

• Work inside a long-standing monolithic codebase where stability, correctness, and performance are essential.

• Debug and resolve complex issues in legacy code with limited modern abstractions.

• Collaborate with product managers and fellow engineers to deliver features tied to real customer and revenue impact.

• Safely evolve existing tax logic while ensuring compliance and system integrity.

• Contribute to code reviews and technical discussions focused on precision and risk management rather than wholesale rewrites.

• Support ongoing feature delivery in an environment where modernization is intentionally limited.
