Role OverviewWe are looking for a highly skilled SQL Server Internals Expert and CDC/Replication Architect who can design, own, and evolve our enterprise‑grade data movement platform. This role is not for BI specialists, Qlik admins, nor traditional Senior DBAs focused solely on operations. Instead, we need a platform‑level architect and technical leader with deep knowledge of SQL Server internals, transaction log mechanics, and native change data capture patterns. The ideal candidate brings a background as a Senior DBA transitioning into architecture, Enterprise SQL Consultant, or Data Platform Architect.
Core Responsibilities:
1. Native CDC Architecture Design
Design enterprise‑level replication models using:
SQL Server native CDC
Log‑based capture
Change tracking or alternative replication patterns when appropriate
Define an LSN continuity and recovery strategy.
Architect incremental data‑movement patterns (batch, streaming, hybrid).
Decide when to leverage native CDC versus external replication tools.
2. SQL Server Internals Ownership
Demonstrate deep understanding of:
Transaction log internals
VLF management and fragmentation
Backup chain continuity
Log reuse wait diagnostics
AlwaysOn/AG failover behavior and its impact on CDC
Define standards for:
Log backup frequency
CDC retention strategy
Governance of long‑running transactions
Monitoring capture job health
3. Replication Strategy & High‑Level Architecture
Propose and document target‑state architecture for enterprise data movement.
Evaluate trade‑offs between:
Native CDC
Qlik Replicate
Alternative tools (Debezium, HVR, etc.)
Define reliability guarantees (RPO, RTO, consistency).
Design failover and failback procedures.
Present architectural decisions to senior stakeholders (CTO, Head of Data).
4. Data Reliability & Consistency Model
Define deterministic reconciliation and validation strategies.
Design idempotent reprocessing patterns.
Own schema‑evolution strategy and related governance.
Maintain data correctness SLAs.
5. DBA Team Coordination & Technical Leadership
Define replication standards across multiple databases and systems.
Prioritize platform improvements and guide execution.
Support the DBA team with:
Log‑health diagnostics
AG configuration
CDC enablement
Mentor DBAs on SQL internals and replication troubleshooting.
Requirements:
Must‑Have
Expert knowledge of SQL Server internals (transaction log, LSNs, VLFs, log truncation, impact of AG/AlwaysOn on CDC).
Hands‑on production experience with native CDC (incremental load design, high‑throughput environments, CDC lag monitoring).
Ability to design end‑to‑end replication architecture and clearly communicate trade‑offs to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Strong technical leadership skills (defining standards, guiding DBA teams, influencing without direct authority).
Nice‑to‑Have:
Experience with Qlik Replicate (contextual understanding rather than core skill).
Exposure to alternative CDC technologies (Debezium/Kafka, GoldenGate, Fivetran HVR).
Knowledge of Snowflake ingestion patterns.
Experience with Infrastructure as Code.
Familiarity with data quality frameworks.
