The successful candidate will join the Cloud Consultants Team (Technology and Science Integration team - TSI) which is responsible for providing the agreed governance, technical support and architectural & policy guidance in the usage of public and hybrid clouds at EMBL-EBI.
Our team is supporting the transformation for more than 600 developers, bioinformaticians and researchers at EMBL-EBI to build cloud portable applications and pipelines (based on containers) that can be deployed on our public and internal infrastructure (Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services and OpenStack). Inside this collaborative effort you will be responsible for:
- Improving the automation of procedures in the usage of cloud resources.
- Providing guidance and best practices in the usage of cloud technologies building practical starting-examples, proof of concepts and providing training.
- Direct support with Research and Service teams to adapt their current pipelines to cloud native environments.
- Collaborating in the development of cloud native solutions for European e-Infrastructure projects like the EOSC Life.
You will have a Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related discipline, or have equivalent experience. The role would be suitable for a Dev/Ops engineer who has interest in automation and experience with CI/CD and scientific pipelines in cloud environments (GCP and AWS). Development skills in Python and Bash are also required.
As the role will involve liaising with different groups and users, it is essential that you have excellent communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills in the English language. You should be able to pay attention to detail, demonstrate solid problem solving skills and have experience and ability to work on a high quality basis. You will also demonstrate proactiveness, with a willingness to take on new challenges and to learn new skills - including cloud qualifications where relevant.
Required:
- A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related discipline, or have equivalent experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in cloud computing (GCP, AWS and/or OpenStack) using containers and Kubernetes.
- Experience in frameworks supporting automated and repeatable processes in the cloud. (i.e. Terraform, Rundeck)
- Experience using GitLab (or similar) for CI/CD and programming in Python and Bash.
- Experience with logging and monitoring systems in GCP and AWS.
- Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills in the English language.
- Be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and with teams both within and external to EMBL-EBI.
You might also have
- Appropriate cloud certifications (i.e. Google Cloud Engineer and/or AWS Developer Associate)
- Application experience in bioinformatics pipelines and workflow managers (i.e. NextFlow)
- Experience of working within distributed project collaborations (e.g. European Commission projects).
