The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking a skilled and motivated Development Operations Engineer to join the
European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA). The EGA is a resource for the permanent archival and distribution of sensitive human genetic and phenotypic data. The primary responsibilities of this role will be to provide continued support in the development, maintenance and deployment of software systems for the EGA to enable the archival and distribution of sequencing data comprising 500,000 whole genomes (>12 PB) as part of the UK Biobank project. Additional responsibilities will include adapting and deploying these software systems for a larger EGA wide use case.
Your role:
As a DevOps Engineer you will engage in the development and production of key components for the EGA and support infrastructure deployment to ensure a high availability service. You will interact with frontline helpdesk technicians and operations bioinformaticians to receive reports and diagnose and remedy service interruptions. You will also help develop, manage, and maintain applications using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Ansible and application deployment technologies such as Kubernetes. By writing, designing, and implementing software to drive reliability and performance, you will ensure continuous quality on production systems as you embed deeply in the many layers and stages of software development.
The EGA is part of the EGA/EVA team led by
Thomas Keane, part of the Molecular Archives Resources at EMBL-EBI. The initial appointment for this position will be 3 years project-based with a potential for extension based on successful delivery of the service and the availability of continued external funding.
You have:
- A degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or equivalent industry experience
- Intermediate software development experience in Java 8/11
- Experience with building and maintaining Kubernetes clusters
- Experience with containerisation technologies, such as Docker, Singularity
- Experience with relational databases, such as PostgreSQL
- Experience using log collection and reporting tools, such as ELK, Grafana
- Familiarity with working in unix environments
- Working in a collaborative professional or academic context in multi-person team on production projects
You might also have:
- Experience in scripting languages, such as Python, bash
- Experience with Spring (Boot) 2.x+
- Experience managing CI/CD pipelines, such as using GitLab, Travis
- Experience with application deployment technologies, such as Ansible, Jenkins, Puppet
- Experience with version control technologies, such as Git, svn
- Experience with message queue systems, such as Kafka, RabbitMQ
- Knowledge of software development lifecycle using Agile methodologies
- Experience or interest in genomics, bioinformatics, or large dataset processing
