Lead Data Engineer 


In Bayer’s global Pharma Research and Development IT organization we thrive to continuously improve our existing product portfolio and create new products that support our colleagues in Pharma on their search for new (digital) therapies and the best decision within our R&D portfolio. We are seeking an excellent Lead Data Engineer (m/f/d) driven by our vision “Health for all, hunger for none”. As a Data Engineer you will be working as part of our interdisciplinary DevOps teams, where you can follow (y)our purpose and grow while working on tough challenges in a global pharma research and development setting. If you are passionate about creating cutting edge software together with scientists to help cure life-threatening diseases, we would love to hear from you. 




  • You define patterns and best practices for data architecture and data pipeline development while following a state-of-the-art governance framework,
  • You are a coach for other Data Engineers in our team and new team members joining a product team,
  • You create and maintain optimal data structures and pipeline architecture,
  • You build infrastructure required to optimally extract, transform, and load data from diverse data sources using various modern and big data technologies,  
  • You help our team to turn scientific datasets into a data product, so that it can be further analyzed, visualized, and processed,
  • You identify and address risks and gaps in technical approaches and develop solutions to meet team and product goals and make your product better,
  • You identify the most important problems to solve, minimize scope, and assess the value of solutions,
  • You keep yourself informed about new tools, technologies and architecture patterns and look for opportunities to apply your findings to your tech stack,
  • Apply continuous delivery practices to deliver high quality data pipelines,
  • You participate in code reviews, pair programming sessions to improve your product and make your team more resilient.




  • University degree (Master or PhD) in computer science or comparable,
  • You have an open mindset, you are team oriented while working in an international team and you value diversity, science, scientific or engineering background, or have worked with customers from these fields before,
  • You have several years of experience with building and operating data platforms with Python,
  • You have experience in data modeling and architectural design,
  • Moreover, you have experience integrating data sources into a data platform, building data pipelines, and modeling large data sets in distributed databases such as Snowflake, Databricks, Presto/Trino, Apache Spark/PySpark,
  • You are familiar with developing data-oriented APIs, such as GraphQL as well as with graph-based data systems like triple stores,
  • Knowledge of (cloud) technologies such as AWS, Terraform, Lambda functions, networking and security complete your profile,
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken. German is a plus but not mandatory.
