Join our team now!

As one of Germany’s leading Legaltech startups (IUSTA is a part of VIER), we set new standards in the field of law firm management systems and mass claims processing together with our clients and partners. With our All-in-one Legal Automation platform, we automate processes for lawyers across Europe and support them to provide even more people with access to legal representation.

We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to manage and further develop our cloud infrastructure. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with containerized SaaS applications and modern cloud technologies. This individual will take ownership of ensuring smooth operations, swift incident resolution, and the continuous optimization and scaling of the systems.

🚀 Your mission:

  • Error Diagnosis & Incident Resolution: Perform thorough error analyses and take ownership of troubleshooting incidents in the production environment. This includes resolving service disruptions and performing fresh installations or resets of systems when necessary, with the goal of minimizing downtime through rapid response.

  • Deploying New Customer Environments: Set up and configure new customer instances of the SaaS platform for onboarding new clients. This involves provisioning the required cloud resources and deploying the containerized application stack for each new customer environment.

  • System Administration & Monitoring: Administer the customer infrastructure (primarily Linux servers on cloud VMs) via SSH and continuously monitor all systems. Leverage existing monitoring tools (e.g., New Relic) to track performance and availability, and integrate additional monitoring or logging tools if needed. Ensure that anomalies are detected early and appropriate alerts are in place so that the team can respond to issues in real time.

  • Cloud Infrastructure Management: Manage and maintain the cloud infrastructure hosted on DigitalOcean, including virtual machines (Droplets) and Kubernetes clusters orchestrated with Rancher. Ensure all Docker containers and Kubernetes-managed services are running reliably. This also entails routine maintenance such as system updates, backups, and capacity planning in the cloud environment.

  • Analysis & Optimization: Continuously analyze the current infrastructure to identify bottlenecks or areas for improvement. Optimize the systems for better performance and reliability, with particular attention to scalability and cost efficiency. For example, adjust resource allocations or architecture design to improve throughput and ensure that the cloud setup is cost-effective (optimizing cloud environments for performance, availability, security, and cost).

  • Planning New Infrastructure Components: Design and implement new infrastructure components or services as the platform grows. Focus on building solutions that are scalable (e.g., enabling automatic scaling and load balancing) and cost-effective. This may involve evaluating new technologies or cloud services that can provide improved scalability or reduce operational costs.

  • CI/CD Pipeline Management: Plan, set up, and maintain Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines to streamline software releases. Work with GitLab (for source control and CI) or similar tools to automate builds, testing, and deployments, ensuring that new features and fixes can be delivered to customers quickly and reliably. This responsibility includes maintaining build environments, optimizing pipeline performance, and ensuring deployment processes are safe and repeatable.

  • Collaboration & Support: Collaborate closely with the development team to align on infrastructure needs and incorporate DevOps best practices early in the development process. Act as a bridge between development and operations, facilitating clear communication. Provide second-level technical support when issues are escalated by the support team or when complex production issues arise, helping to diagnose and resolve such issues to maintain customer satisfaction.

Your qualifications and skills:

  • Experience: Several years of experience in a relevant role such as DevOps Engineer, Systems Administrator with cloud experience, or Site Reliability Engineer. The candidate should have a practical background in both software deployment and IT infrastructure management.

  • Containers & Orchestration: Strong expertise with containerization (Docker) and container orchestration (Kubernetes). Experience with Rancher or similar Kubernetes management frameworks is a plus. The candidate must be capable of deploying and managing containerized applications in a cluster environment.

  • Cloud Platforms: Solid knowledge of cloud infrastructure; specifically experience with DigitalOcean is ideal (managing Droplets and Kubernetes services). Alternatively, experience with other cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is acceptable. Should understand cloud networking, scaling instances, and managing cloud resources effectively.

  • Tech Stack Familiarity: Comfortable working in an environment built on Node.js (backend) and Angular (frontend). While this role is not focused on application development, understanding how Node.js services and Angular applications are deployed and run (especially in containers) is important for effective operations and troubleshooting.

  • Databases: Experience with database systems, particularly SQL databases and MongoDB. The infrastructure includes a central database cluster (SQL & MongoDB on DigitalOcean), so knowledge of database management (backups, replication, performance tuning) and the ability to coordinate with database administrators is expected.

  • Monitoring & Logging: Proficiency with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., New Relic, or similar APM/monitoring solutions). The candidate should be able to configure and use these tools to track system health and performance metrics, ensuring issues are spotted early. Prior experience setting up alerts and dashboards to maintain high availability and reliability is highly valued.

  • DevOps Toolchain & Automation: Hands-on experience with standard DevOps tools and processes: version control systems (Git/GitLab), CI/CD pipeline tools (GitLab CI, Jenkins or similar), and automation/scripting (e.g. Bash, Python). The ability to automate routine tasks (infrastructure as code, configuration management) is important to increase efficiency and reduce manual errors. Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, etc.) would be a bonus. (Skills in source control, automation tools, cloud platforms, container tech, and CI/CD are generally expected from DevOps engineers.)

  • Linux Systems Administration: Strong skills in administering Linux servers via command line/SSH. Since the services run on Linux-based systems, the candidate must be adept with Linux operating system internals, shell scripting, and using command-line tools to troubleshoot and configure servers.

  • DevOps Mindset: A profound understanding of DevOps principles—notably the importance of bridging development and operations, continuous improvement, and automation. The candidate should embrace practices such as collaborative problem-solving, sharing knowledge, and potentially DevSecOps (integrating basic security practices into operations) to ensure a robust deployment pipeline.

Your Personal Qualities:

  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: An analytical, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to systematically diagnose complex issues and find effective solutions. This role demands strong troubleshooting skills to quickly identify root causes of incidents and resolve them under pressure.

  • Ownership & Proactiveness: A high degree of initiative and responsibility. The ideal candidate takes ownership of the platform’s reliability and will proactively identify potential problems or improvements. They should be comfortable making decisions to enhance the infrastructure and be accountable for the outcomes.

  • Team Collaboration & Communication: Excellent team player with strong communication skills. In a DevOps capacity, this person acts as an intermediary between different groups (developers, IT, possibly customer support), so the ability to communicate clearly and bridge knowledge gaps is crucial. They should foster a collaborative environment and work well in cross-functional teams.

  • Adaptability & Continuous Learning: Willingness to continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and tools. The tech landscape (especially in DevOps/cloud) evolves rapidly; the candidate should be enthusiastic about keeping skills up-to-date and implementing best practices.

  • Resilience: Ability to handle high-pressure situations, such as critical outages or tight deployment deadlines. Ideally, the candidate is willing to participate in an on-call rotation if needed, responding to alerts and incidents even outside normal hours to ensure system uptime. They should remain calm and effective during emergency responses and coordinate swift recovery actions.
