About the role
The contract will be fixed-term, with the duration dependent on the length of the maternity leave.
As a Time Management API team, we are working on very interesting problems that help and impact the work of 300,000+ Tesco employees. We have a very experienced team, and we emphasize quality, development, learning, and sharing our knowledge and experience. Our API handles over 150 million requests per month while keeping P90 response time below 25ms and error rate below 0.01%. Our vision is to deliver cutting-edge, strategic API solutions to manage contracts and schedules, enhancing the experience for colleagues and managers through our advanced compute engines. We are authoritative source for colleague contractual shift and schedule data for all Tesco business entities, reliably providing this data for many consumer systems and expanding our reach to include new colleague populations. By providing this data, we will empower colleagues to work more flexibly.
You will be responsible for
You will be solving problems, and developing new features through quality, scalable, performant, and maintainable technical solutions. The solutions that you and your team will be responsible for will have a global reach, impacting hundreds of thousands of Tesco colleagues.
We operate in a DevOps philosophy. We take responsibility for the software through its entire lifecycle. We practice continuous integration, delivery, and support of our code through to production and beyond.
Primary focus will be on developing user interface components and implementing them following well-known React.js workflows (such as Flux or Redux) and Node JS. You will ensure that these components and the overall application are secure, performant, robust and easy to maintain. You will coordinate with the rest of the team working on different layers of the infrastructure. Therefore, a commitment to collaborative problem-solving, sophisticated design and quality product is important.
Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:
Be a coder; review and contribute code.
Be proactive and take strong ownership.
Design: design, propose and review architecture design.
Focus on performance, availability, reliability, and security.
Cross-platform, lightweight & mobile-first progressive web applications by design.
Contribute to the definition of features for services owned by your team.
Effectively communicate your and your team’s progress to your team members, your manager, and wider Tesco colleagues.
Develop new user-facing features and maintaining existing features using React.js with Typescript and Redux / Mobex.
Build reusable components and front-end libraries for future use.
Translate designs and wireframes into high quality code.
Optimize components for maximum performance across a vast array of web-capable devices and browsers.
You will need
Mandatory skills:
4+ years of commercial software development experience in JS / TypeScript.
Experience in running and supporting software in production (dev-ops approach).
Problem-solving, analysis, and computational skills. You are comfortable designing systems and reasoning about them. When tackling problems, you take a thorough and logical approach to solving them and you retain ownership through to resolution.
Designing and developing systems for high availability and scalability.
Depth of professional software engineering experience and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
JavaScript / TypeScript / React / Node.js
Micro-frontend architecture
Single Page Application
Testing (e.g. Unit Tests, E2E Tests)
Written & spoken English
Nice to Have:
Experience working within an e-commerce or at-scale business where security, availability, and reliability are valued.
