Cloud Architect (Application & Middleware) (m/f/n)

We are currently seeking an experienced Cloud Architect (Application & Middleware) to join a major European Union programme. This role is ideal for a senior specialist skilled in PHP, Apache Tomcat, application-layer architecture and modern container-native patterns. The position combines architectural ownership with hands-on engineering insight and close collaboration with cloud, DevOps and solution teams.

Responsibilities:

• Own and maintain reference architectures for PHP‑FPM, Apache Tomcat and Apache HTTP Server.

• Define and document standards for multi‑application deployments across supported runtimes.

• Lead the design of containerisation for Kubernetes, covering runtime configuration and image standards.

• Create and maintain Architectural Decision Records (ADRs).

• Define integration approaches with platform tooling (API gateways, automation tools, service catalogues).

• Support the definition of sovereign cloud requirements and future private cloud capabilities.

• Define observability requirements (logging, metrics, tracing) for application-layer components.

• Collaborate with Solution Architecture and product teams to ensure alignment with platform standards.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption strategies.

• Mentor architects and DevOps squads working with application and middleware technologies.

Requirements:

• Personal Security Clearance UE Secret — active or willingness to obtain after onboarding.

• EU citizenship (mandatory).

• Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required; proficiency in any other European language is a plus.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, IT or related field.

• At least 8 years of professional experience in Cloud, Kubernetes or Application Architecture roles.

• Deep expertise in PHP runtime environments and Apache Tomcat.

• Strong experience designing container-native architectures (Kubernetes, multi-application workloads).

• Proficiency with Apache HTTP Server and Nginx.

• Programming background enabling runtime analysis and troubleshooting.

• Experience with IaC tools (Ansible, Terraform, Crossplane).

• Familiarity with API gateways (Tyk, Kong).

• Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Dynatrace).

• Experience producing architecture documentation and working with governance processes.

Nice to have:

• Knowledge of n8n workflow automation.

• Experience with service catalogues (Cycloid, Backstage).

• Familiarity with GitOps tools (ArgoCD, Flux).

• Experience with WebLogic Server migrations.
