Senior FOSS Licensing Specialist – Open Source Compliance Expert

As a Senior FOSS Licensing Specialist – Open Source Compliance Expert, you will be working for our client in the financial services industry. You’ll support the development of policies, processes, and controls governing HSBC’s use and contribution to free and open source software. Your expertise will help ensure compliance, mitigate risks, and foster responsible open source collaboration across engineering teams.

Your main responsibilities:

• Evaluate and communicate the implications of FOSS licenses to technical teams
• Contribute to training sessions and awareness campaigns on open source license implications
• Categorize licenses not recognized by automation into predefined categories (Liberal, Permissible, Weak Copyleft, Copyleft, Banned)
• Review HSBC’s current treatment of open source licenses and recommend improvements or exceptions
• Assist in the selection, assessment, and development of license evaluation automation tools such as Nexus IQ Server, Black Duck, or similar
• Liaise with engineering, legal, and compliance teams to ensure consistent and accurate license management
• Work independently in a fast-paced, regulated environment, demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and communication skills

You're ideal for this role if you have:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in copyright, contract law, or open source compliance in a regulated environment
• Strong interest and experience in software development and open source software from usage or contribution perspectives
• Knowledge of open source licenses, copyright implications, and software licensing practices
• Experience with development security operations (DevSecOps)
• Familiarity with evaluation tools such as Nexus IQ Server, Black Duck, or similar
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills

It is a strong plus if you have:

• Formal legal training or certification in copyright law
• Experience working in an agile environment

English — fluent command required.
