Role Overview

We are looking for an Ontology Engineer to join a team focused on building semantic data foundations across R&D and manufacturing. You will design and implement ontologies and semantic models that enable interoperable, traceable, and AI-ready scientific data. You will work closely with domain experts, data engineers, and architects to translate scientific concepts into standardized ontologies and semantic mappings, supporting knowledge graphs, metadata solutions, and data products

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain ontologies, semantic models, and controlled vocabularies

• Define and implement mappings between source data and ontology concepts

• Partner with domain experts to define terminology, relationships, and semantic structures

• Evaluate and integrate external ontologies where relevant

• Contribute to governance, documentation, and lifecycle management of semantic assets

• Support integration with knowledge graphs, metadata platforms, and data products

• Ensure semantic consistency, interoperability, and reuse across domains

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science, or similar

• Hands-on experience in ontology engineering, semantic modeling, or knowledge representation

• Strong knowledge of semantic web standards: RDF/RDFS, OWL, SPARQL, SHACL

• Experience translating business or domain requirements into semantic or information models

• Solid understanding of metadata, controlled vocabularies, and data interoperability

• Ability to work across multiple data sources and collaborate with technical and business stakeholders

• Strong analytical and communication skills

Nice to Have

• Experience in life sciences (biology, chemistry, pharma R&D)

• Knowledge of ontology design patterns and trade-offs

• Understanding of FAIR data principles

• Experience in CMC, scientific data capture, or ELN environments

• Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, or agile delivery environments
