Solutions Architect - Smart Meters

We are seeking an experienced Senior Solution Architect to provide independent architectural leadership and assurance across a large-scale PAYG Smart Metering Programme. This is a major capital initiative focused on replacing a legacy pay-as-you-go gas metering estate with modern Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) across Ireland.

The programme involves multiple external vendors delivering key components including meters, communications networks, headend systems, meter data management, and market-facing interfaces. This role will act as the senior architectural authority, ensuring all elements integrate into a cohesive, end-to-end solution.

This is not a hands-on design and build role. Instead, you will focus on governance, oversight, and assurance, ensuring architectural integrity across the full lifecycle — from detailed design through to build, testing, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and assure the end-to-end AMI solution architecture across all suppliers and internal components

• Review and challenge supplier High-Level and Low-Level Designs through Architecture Review Boards and Design Authority forums

• Own the integration architecture — including interfaces, data flows, integration patterns, and ownership models

• Define and assure non-functional requirements such as performance, scalability, resilience, availability, and recoverability

• Maintain architecture documentation including decision logs, assumptions, and risk registers

• Lead architectural engagement across business teams, IT, delivery partners, and external stakeholders

• Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards throughout the programme lifecycle

• Provide oversight on operational readiness and cyber resilience

Essential Requirements

• 10+ years’ experience in Solution Architecture (mandatory)

• Recent (within the last 24 months) experience on an AMI or smart metering programme (mandatory)

• Proven experience in a multi-supplier environment, providing assurance and challenging vendor designs

• Strong integration architecture experience across complex, multi-party ecosystems

• Experience participating in Design Authority / Architecture Review Boards

• Background in a regulated industry or programme environment

• Ability to work onsite in Cork and Dublin

Highly Desirable

• Experience with NB-IoT / IoT communications infrastructure

• Knowledge of Headend Systems or Meter Data Management platforms

• Experience within the Irish or UK utilities sector

• Familiarity with Oracle integration technologies (OIC, APIM)

• Understanding of NIS2 / critical infrastructure security architecture

• Experience working alongside an internal enterprise architecture function
