COBOL Developer
The COBOL Developer maintains and develops legacy systems, often used in core enterprise or public-sector environments, with a strong focus on stability, reliability, and documentation.
Main Responsibilities:
Maintain and improve existing COBOL-based applications.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and implement new functionality.
Ensure documentation of code changes and system functionalities.
Test, debug, and optimize COBOL applications for performance and reliability.
Participate in code reviews to ensure high-quality standards.
Provide technical support during deployment and post-deployment stages.
Key Requirements:
Fluent German (C1 level, spoken and written)
English skills (min. B1 level, spoken and written)
Degree in Computer Science (Bachelor) or equivalent professional qualification with several years of experience (min. 5 years).
Strong COBOL knowledge (at least COBOL-85, including available language features such as procedures with local variables, etc.)
Practical experience in COBOL development projects (minimum 2 years, better 4)
Git (branching, merging)
Jira and Confluence
Experience with:
Micro Focus Visual COBOL (minimum 1 year, better 2)
Strong Linux skills, including system functionality, package managers, and the use of terminal and console (minimum 1 year)
Testing methods (minimum 2 years, better 3)
Knowledge and practical experience in creating requirements specifications and functional specifications (minimum 1 year, better 2)
Experience with large public sector projects (e.g. KONSENS) or comparable large-scale private sector projects. “Comparable” means projects with:
a contract duration of at least 24 months, and
deployment of at least 10 personnel (minimum 1 year)
Domain experience in tax-related projects (minimum 1 year)
Nice to Have:
Knowledge of agile development methodologies.
Familiarity with cloud technologies.
Understanding of DevOps practices.
Other Details:
Position offers remote work flexibility with occasional visits to Germany. The project is expected to last for 48 months starting in May, with a considerable focus on delivering stable public-sector applications.
