Job description

At FactoryFix, we’re making it possible for anyone to build a worthwhile career in manufacturing. Manufacturing talent is disappearing even though the need for skilled labor is more important than ever. We aim to elevate the work so that talented people can make a good living and push this vital industry forward.

We’re looking for a product designer to thoughtfully solve problems for our users and for our business. You’ll design creative, functional and impactful experiences and work closely with product managers, engineers, and other designers to turn them into reality. All the while, you’ll develop and expand our product design systems to better scale our work. Sometimes you’ll grapple with broadly defined, loose concepts, and sometimes you’ll focus on narrowly defined, tactical deliverables. No matter what, our product designers take pride in crafting user-focused experiences that make an impact for our community.

We’re still early in our mission of building manufacturing back up. Joining our small product team early means your fingerprints will be all over the foundation of the product and it's growth.

Our organization values people who:

  • Ask why - we’re curious, obsessive over understanding the problem, willing to challenge and validate assumptions
  • Take ownership - we assume responsibility and focus on impact, frugally making the most of every resource
  • Make it easy - we’re kind to our audience, build solid foundations for future work, and fight against unnecessary complexity

As a product designer, you’ll need these skills to deliver on that expectation:

  • Empathy for our users. You have a strong desire to talk with them and are familiar with a wide variety of research techniques to understand their problems. You can design for human emotions.
  • Deep understanding of user-centered design methods and principles. You have extensive knowledge of mobile and desktop design patterns (including when to break them), and can reduce complex problems down to the right balance of flexibility, impact, and ease of use.
  • Attention to detail. You value well-crafted design and keep pushing your work until all details are attended to.
  • Strong communication skills. You can synthesize disparate insights and persuasively articulate your work, process, and decisions.
  • Effective prototyping skills, both to validate ideas at different stages of the design process as well as to articulate your designs (especially in cases where interactions are particularly nuanced)
We’re looking for someone who can hit the ground running. Be prepared to share several examples of real work you've shipped and your process in designing those experiences.
