A unique and exciting opportunity has been created for a scientific software engineer to work on the development of the
ChEBI database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/), which contains detailed information on small molecule compounds in biology. ChEBI is a very widely used resource, with a growing user base numbered in the hundreds of thousands and with millions of accesses every year. This "new ChEBI" will be developed using modern software technologies, making it easier to support, and will be more flexible, efficient and sustainable.
The successful candidate will be based in the Chemical Biology Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and will closely with other members of the team, together with other groups at EMBL-EBI and collaborators as required. You will be responsible for the implementation of a new database schema and its data import and integration pipelines, a new searching infrastructure, a facility to enable users to submit new entries in bulk and visualisation of the ChEBI ontology which is a unique feature of the database. In addition to having relevant software engineering and programming skills you will need to have excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and be able to interact not only with other software engineers but also with ChEBI’s many users.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to a widely-used software resource, including:
- Develop key elements of the “new ChEBI” database and resource including a new database schema, data import and integration pipelines, a new searching infrastructure, a mechanism to enable the bulk submission of new entries and visualisation of the ChEBI ontology
- Interact with key users of ChEBI at EMBL-EBI and our global collaborators to actively solicit feedback as the project progresses
- Be an active member of the chemical biology team of software engineers, curators and scientists
- Interact with the wider ChEBI user community, for example at events such as workshops and conferences
- Contribute to the broader goals of the team and EMBL-EBI in developing resources for the scientific community
