Linux System Administrator / on-site / La Spezia, Italy
We are looking for an experienced Linux System Administrator to join an international project within the defence and maritime research sector. The project focuses on maintaining and developing IT infrastructure that supports advanced research operations, laboratory environments, and classified/unclassified systems used in scientific and field activities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Linux specialist who enjoys working in secure, highly technical environments and wants to contribute to mission‑critical projects.
Role Responsibilities
Administer, configure and maintain Linux environments (RHEL servers and Ubuntu workstations).
Integrate Linux services with a Windows/Active Directory environment (Centrify).
Maintain and support virtualized infrastructure (VMware).
Install, configure, and maintain services such as Bind, Apache, MySQL, LDAP, anti‑malware solutions, repositories.
Develop automation scripts for system administration tasks (bash/shell).
Provide 2nd‑line support for on‑site systems and deployed installations (e.g., research vessels).
Monitor system performance, generate reports, and recommend improvements.
Participate in release management: rollout, rollback, preventive maintenance.
Create and maintain technical and service documentation.
Work closely with the Service Desk, supporting knowledge transfer and efficient incident flow.
Ensure electronic and physical security of systems in both classified and unclassified environments.
Remain up‑to‑date with relevant technologies and assist in maintaining a modern, stable IT environment.
Requirements (must‑have)
Minimum 5 years of experience in system administration.
Minimum 3 years of hands‑on experience with:
Linux RHEL servers
Ubuntu workstations
Designing and maintaining Linux‑based infrastructure (including virtualized environments)
Experience with Linux scripting (bash/shell).
Practical experience with:
Bind
Apache
MySQL
LDAP
Anti‑malware tools
Repository management
Experience with VMware virtualization technologies.
Experience integrating Linux with Windows AD using Centrify.
Network troubleshooting skills.
Experience administering: LDAP, SELinux, Apache, Bind, IPA authentication, Bash.
Fast learning, problem‑solving mindset, and customer‑oriented approach.
English level C1 (daily work in international environment).
Mandatory citizenship of a NATO member state.
Active NATO Secret (or National Secret) Security Clearance
Nice to have:
Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
Powershell scripting (Centrify automation).
Advanced shell scripting (post‑install automation, repo management).
Experience with GIT.
Knowledge of load balancing, firewalls, Cisco networking, EMC SAN.
Security standards familiarity (NIST, ISO 27001, NCSC).
Certifications: RHCE, RHCA, CompTIA Linux+, Security+, VCP, etc.
Previous experience in a mixed military/civilian international environment.
