    Role Overview:


    We are going through an exciting period of change and are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineering Manager to join our Software Engineering team. As an Engineering Manager, you will be in an engineering leadership role which encompasses people, process & delivery responsibility. You will lead and manage multiple engineering squads to deliver customer outcomes and opportunities for our business. This role is within our Fulfilment domain where we maintain a number of operational applications used for in-store support and order fulfilment using the latest technologies and software.

    Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

    • Accountability: Accountable for their domain squads, with equal focus on both people and successful outcomes. They build their teams with excellence in mind. Planning and oversight of their squads, working closely with their Engineering Squad Leads, makes up a large element of their daily lives. They support and influence their teams towards technical excellence, through a culture of continuous improvement, learning and process ownership.
    • Collaboration: Collaborates closely with both our Product function and all Engineering Chapters: with our Product colleagues, ensuring squad output truly meets our customer needs; with our Chapters, to support and grow our Engineers, facilitating the excellence our customers deserve. Collaborates with peers to manage interdependencies. Works with stakeholders across all levels of the business to ensure customer value is delivered on time and to budget, whilst maintaining software and quality standards.  
    • Coach and Advisor: Provides inspiration, coaching and feedback to their team, reporting progress to Engineering Directors and Product Leadership, with a focus on people development and performance via the support of chapter leaders. Champions engagement within domain, in conjunction with Squad Leads.
    • Leadership: Utilise their first-hand experience to communicate their vision & shape their Domain’s impact. They combine their passions for software engineering and leading by example to nurture impactful teams.  
    • Build collaborative relationships: Collaborate with the Chapters to define & support career development for their engineers. Drive highly effective communication and engagement across banner and group stakeholders, communicating the Engineering vision & strategy and their alignment with banner and group roadmaps.
    • Performance Management: Work with the relevant Chapters to define goals and objectives for the engineers. Deploy the performance processes for their Engineers, using the Chapter toolkits.    
    • Talent Management: Implement and contribute to talent management, coaching and succession planning for the Domain; using chapter tool kit. 
    • Belonging: Foster and grow a highly collaborative and inclusive Domain, that enables evolution of high performing, engaged and inclusive Squads.


    Required Skills & Experience:

    • Considerable experience of developing software with a quality focus.
    • Demonstrable experience of leading and shaping impactful software engineering teams.
    • Experience supporting and working within defined Quality governance frameworks and driving to insert testing earlier into the lifecycle.
    • Able to facilitate Software & Quality Engineers working closely together to remove barriers/silos/hand-offs.
    • Experience supporting both Software & Quality Engineers adopt testing activities where appropriate.
    • Broad understanding of the IT industry, markets, trends, emerging technologies, and their implications for retail organisations.
    • Understanding of the banner imperatives and service requirements of retail or similar organisations.
    • Experience of shaping, motivating, and driving change within a large, complex, matrix and fast-moving environment.
    • Excellent stakeholder management & influencing skills at all levels of the organisation.
    • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
    • Effective and creative problem-solving and decision-making.
    • Experience in assessing RCA with a view to addressing systemic issues.
    • Ability to navigate complexity and ambiguity to quickly identify simple/effective solutions.
    • Talented people leader, coaching, mentoring, facilitation, and teaching, whilst developing a pipeline of future talent.
