As a Senior FOSS Licensing Specialist – Open Source Compliance and Legal Analysis, you will be working for our client, a leading financial institution, within the Engineering Practice team in HSBC Technology’s CTO Function. You will play a pivotal role in defining policies, processes, and controls that ensure responsible use and contribution to open source software, fostering secure and compliant software development practices.
Your main responsibilities:
- Evaluate and communicate the implications of FOSS licenses to engineering teams.
- Contribute to training initiatives and increase awareness of open source license considerations.
- Categorise open source licenses not recognised by automation into categories like Liberal, Permissible, Weak Copyleft, Copyleft, and Banned, according to HSBC standards.
- Review HSBC’s existing treatment of open source licenses and recommend improvements, exceptions, and conditions.
- Participate in selecting, assessing, and developing automation tools for license evaluation.
- Liaise with engineering teams and HSBC legal to ensure compliance and clarity.
You're ideal for this role if you have:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in property copyright, contract law, or related legal fields.
- Strong interest and hands-on experience in software development.
- Experience working with open source software both from usage and contribution perspectives.
- Background working within a controls or regulated environment.
- Self-motivated attitude with the ability to work independently under tight deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills in English.
It is a strong plus if you have:
- Legal training or expertise in copyright law.
- DevSecOps experience.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
- Experience with evaluation tools such as Nexus IQ Server, Black Duck, or similar.
