Now is an exciting time to join the R&D Tech organization and play a part in the modernization strategy to support GSK. The Senior Engineer, Established Products and Support is a key role in this mission and is accountable for leading the innovation strategies to modernize the tools and techniques used across the entire R&D portfolio increasing value, in alignment with each of the solution group strategies.

These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Contribute to strategies across the established product portfolio to deliver our ‘simplify and modernise’ agenda:
    • Infrastucture (cloud first, monitoring and cost control),
    • Automation (backend automation to improve stability, quality and efficiency of support) and API layer (expose functionality for self-support, data for secondary reuse and to help sweat assets near end of life).
  • Work with partners, in alignment with the strategies, to assess the portfolio and available tools to identify backlog items of value to be prioritised and delivered.
  • Provide a technical management capability to coordinate/deliver cross portfolio initiatives.
  • Provide guidance to partners about how best to carry out the ongoing operational management of the technology to achieve stability and optimum performance.
  • Research and development of solutions which can be used to simplify or automate R&D Tech operations, reduce costs, and increase service levels.
  • Management of critical problems impacting core business operations.
  • Work with partners to manage cross portfolio delivery of security / infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain technical awareness of established products core infrastructure, including elements of Server OS, Storage, Database, and domain specific expertise.
  • The Engineer is a “T-Shaped” role demonstrating both depth and breadth across key engineer competencies e.g. Software Development, Testing, DevOps, Data Science/Analytics, Lifecycle Management, etc. and the ability to successfully collaborate with experts from other subject domains.
  • The continuous delivery of technology solutions from product roadmaps adopting agile and DevOps principles.
  • Ensures that technical delivery is fully compliant with GSK Security, Quality and Regulatory standards.
  • Ensures use of relevant R&D Tech / central services and collaborating with service partners in identification and delivery of service improvements.
  • Supports Product Owner and product team to deliver value continuously, fostering and maintaining close links with customers, related Solution groups e.g. Established Products and Core Tech.
  • Ensures continuity of business execution i.e. operational support for relevant applications.
  • Proactively develops and delivers continuous improvement/simplification of Product portfolio to enhance user productivity, increase system reliability and reduce the total cost of ownership.
  • Keeps relevant technical documentation up to date in support of the lifecycle plan for audits/reviews.
  • Pro-actively engages in experimentation and innovation to drive relentless improvement e.g. to UX/DQ/DI and reducing technical debt/risk.
  • Provides technical direction and GSK expertise to product teams composed of GSK FTEs, strategic partners and software vendors.
  • Contributes to release planning working closely with the Product Owner.

Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills and knowledge to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science, engineering, computing or relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency / Knowledge of infrastructure management and monitoring tools: Elastic Stack, Ansible
  • Enterprise Change experience
  • Strong relationship management, influencing and communication skills
  • Experience with relevant technology platforms and frameworks including cloud technologies: MS Azure / GCP, IaaS, PaaS, Kubernetes, Docker
  • Database experience: Oracle, SQL Server.

Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Proficiency / Knowledge in some of the following areas:
    • Agile, DevOps & Automation (Azure DevOps, Jira, Terraform).
    • Software development (C#, Python, PowerShell), architecture design (e.g. SOA) & technology platforms/frameworks. 
    • Data science (e.g. AI/ML), data analytics & data quality/integrity (Power BI, Kibana).
    • Testing strategies & frameworks.
  • Experience of product lifecycle & service management.
  • Experience in agile development and DevOps.
  • Experience with ITIL.
  • Experience with data structures (i.e. information management), data models or relational database design.
  • Subject matter expertise R&D business process.
