Job description

Why this role exists

At GOG, we build for gamers who care about preservation, community and nostalgia. Our mission is bold: make games live forever - and that requires seamless, modern experiences that resonate with today’s players while staying true to GOG’s identity.

GOG GALAXY is our desktop client and ecosystem hub - the place where players manage their libraries, connect with the community, and access features that go far beyond a store. Today, it delivers experience on Windows and macOS, but Linux is the next major frontier.

We’re looking for a Senior Engineer who will help shape GOG GALAXY’s architecture, tooling, and development standards with Linux in mind from day one.

At the same time, GOG GALAXY is a long-lived product with a large and complex C++ codebase. The challenge is twofold:

  • evolve and modernize the codebase while maintaining stability for millions of players

  • design solutions that scale across platforms, system configurations, and features

We’re looking for someone who wants real ownership -  a person who enjoys working close to the operating system, understands cross-platform trade-offs, and cares about how technical decisions translate into the player experience.

If you’re excited about building complex desktop software, shaping a Linux platform strategy, and having a tangible impact on a product used by millions of gamers, this role was created for you.

What success looks like in the first 6-12 months

  • You own and evolve the technical architecture of GOG GALAXY across platforms

  • You lead the delivery of major GOG GALAXY features - from technical discovery through implementation, optimization and release.

  • You actively mentor developers, raise engineering quality, and create a culture of ownership and technical excellence.

  • You are a trusted technical partner for Product Manager and Engineering Manager, helping shape scope, priorities and trade-offs.

Key challenges you’ll tackle

  • Modernizing a large, long-lived C++ codebase without disrupting millions of users

  • Balancing cross-platform consistency with Linux-specific requirements

  • Scaling GOG GALAXY architecture to support new community and preservation features

  • Improving performance, startup time and stability on diverse hardware setups

  • Making smart technical trade-offs in a product with strong emotional value for users

What you’ll do day-to-day

  • Develop and optimize the GOG GALAXY desktop application with a strong focus on performance, stability and user experience

  • Build and maintain GOG GALAXY on Linux, while collaborating on cross-platform solutions (Windows / macOS)

  • Design, implement and review core C++ components and system-level integrations

  • Work closely with backend, frontend and product teams to deliver end-to-end features

  • Improve automated testing, CI pipelines and release confidence

  • Actively use and promote AI-assisted development tools to increase team efficiency and code quality

What will help you succeed

Technical depth

  • 5+ years of commercial experience with modern C++ and system-level programming

  • 3+ years of experience in a senior engineering role

  • Experience developing desktop applications for at least two platforms: Linux (must have) and Windows or macOS

  • Experience with Python

  • Experience with performance optimization, profiling and stability improvements

  • Understanding of software architecture and system design

  • Define and uphold engineering standards (performance, reliability, maintainability)

  • Active use of AI tools in daily development workflows, and enthusiasm for helping the team increase adoption

Product & mindset

  • Strong product sense: you think beyond code, empathize with gamers, and care about outcomes

  • Balance short-term fixes with long-term code health

  • Deep expertise in desktop application development with curiosity to grow beyond core C++ - whether that’s product discovery, frontend collaboration, or data etc.

  • Ownership mentality and willingness to tackle hard, ambiguous problems

  • Comfort working with legacy systems while pushing them forward

Nice to have

  • Experience with gaming platforms, launchers or community-driven products

  • Passion for games and game preservation

  • Experience with embedded browsers in desktop applications

  • CI/CD experience (Jenkins, GitLab)
