Job description

In this role you will join a fast-paced, startup-like environment, where the latest technologies in front-end development and data visualisation are exploited to influence decisions in the drug discovery area. We are looking for a Full Stack Developer who will help us bring our user-facing services to the next level.

Utilising your technical skill set, your primary tasks will be the active development of the genetics portal to integrate new data provided by the genetics team, and to ensure a reliable and responsive user interface. The genetics portal shares a common infrastructure with the Open Targets platform, based on React web applications and GraphQL APIs.

Additionally, you will focus on:

  • Designing, developing and improving robust and testable web applications to facilitate target validation.
  • Help in the design, documentation and implementation of the relevant API endpoints.
  • Developing, integrating and maintaining reusable data visualisation components, including complex graph-based data and ontologies.
  • Collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team together with geneticists, data scientists, back-end developers and UX experts. Proactivity and a problem-solving mindset are highly encouraged.
  • Investigation and selection of appropriate technologies to help drug discovery.
  • Ensuring the open source nature of the Open Targets project.

You will work in a small team and should be able to demonstrate the ability to work well with colleagues and to collaborate with external partners. You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a stimulating, multidiscipline, international culture.

You have:

  • Highly skilled at front-end engineering using JavaScript/Typescript, HTML5 and CSS.
  • Experience using modern web-design frameworks (e.g. React, Angular or Vue).
  • Experience in the development or maintenance of back-end technologies and APIs.
  • Proven experience on widespread languages such as Python, Java or Scala
  • A solid understanding of web application development processes: from layout/user interface to deployment and testing.
  • Understanding of web application security, scalability, performance and reliability.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with scientific colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and organise own workload.

An interest or experience in life sciences or drug discovery would be advantageous, but is not necessary. We encourage candidates with all levels of experience to apply including Web Developers and Full Stack Engineers.

You might also have:

  • Interest to learn about the application of genetics to drug discovery
  • Familiarity with Open Targets frameworks and technologies: Spark, Elastic, Clickhouse, GraphQL, Google Cloud, Docker, etc.
  • Previous experiences handling large amounts of data on web production
  • Interest in data visualisation for the web (D3, Canvas, SVG).
