Role Summary
The Engineering Manager leads engineering teams responsible for delivering highquality product software within defined areas of responsibility. This role sits below Engineering Director and above Senior/Staff Engineers and is a peoplemanagement role with direct reports.
The Engineering Manager is accountable for delivery execution, team performance, and technical quality, working closely with Product Management, Architecture, Operations, and Support. The role executes the product roadmap, makes reliable tactical decisions, and contributes technical input to product direction without owning companywide strategy.
This position is within the Retailer Management Applications domain, focused on cloudnative, multitenant services and components.
Key Responsibilities
People Leadership
Linemanage a team of software engineers (typically 5–10)
Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning
Coach engineers on technical growth, ownership, and operational excellence
Support hiring, onboarding, retention, and performance management
Ensure adherence to company policies and engineering standards
Delivery & Execution
Own delivery outcomes for assigned product areas
Execute product roadmaps in alignment with Product Management and Architecture
Translate objectives into actionable plans and milestones
Track progress, manage risks, and make course corrections as needed
Plan and report delivery over 1 to 12 month horizons
Technical Leadership
Provide technical direction and oversight without being the primary implementer
Ensure software aligns with architectural principles, standards, and maintainability goals
Review designs and challenge decisions constructively
Ensure systems meet standards for reliability, performance, security, and observability
Act as a technical and operational escalation point
This role does not require daytoday coding but requires strong technical credibility.
CrossFunctional Collaboration
Partner with Product Management to provide technical input and execute the roadmap
Facilitate collaboration with other Product Engineering teams
Collaborate with DevOps, Operations, Support, Security, and Legal to ensure products are deployable, operable, and compliant
Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to leadership and stakeholders
Requirements
Higher education, preferably in Information Technology or a related field
5–8 years of experience in software engineering
Proven experience managing engineers with direct reports
Strong background as a software engineer or technical lead
Experience with teams and projects comprising Java as well as front end engineers
Ability to balance people leadership, delivery accountability, and technical oversight
Experience delivering and operating businesscritical systems
Fluency in English
Willingness to travel internationally when required
